The Student Government Association only considered one measure this week and summarily rejected it.
The resolution would have formalized an assistant Big Event director position. Senators voted to table it after brief discussion.
It was proposed by Jacob Letner, SGA Big Event director. He argued that it would help him “immensely” to have a permanent unpaid assistant.
He also wanted this assistant to be in a position to easily replace him as Big Event director when he leaves the job at the end of the academic year.
Multiple senators said that a constitutional amendment the resolution called for wasn’t necessary.
Taylor Gravett, SGA president, also noted during the meeting that he believes that no information about the recent changes to the Modern Languages and Literature department has been forthcoming to anyone, even instructors that he has spoken with.
Conversation during a report by Steve Erwin, SGA co-adviser and associate vice president of campus life and auxiliary services, concerned a recent visit to campus by a confrontational preacher.
Erwin responded to questions about hate speech and how the university regulates what can and cannot be said on campus.
Senators also inquired about counter-protests. Erwin said that the preacher registers specific times that he will be in the Oval and that spontaneous counter-protests could be a public safety issue.
However, students do generally participate in counter-protests when the preacher visits campus without restriction. University Police did establish a barrier around the preacher during his last visit.
